FEBRUARY 2012
My fellow Lions,
It is hard for me to believe five months have passed, so quickly.
We have accomplished, so much! We added six new members to our club. We raised money, and sold raffle tickets. We created, designed, ordered, and sold 300 cookbooks in less than 90 days. We collected food and Christmas toys for the needy families in our community. We stood on street corners for White Cane, sold brooms, cleaned a stretch of road in Lake Lure, and manned booths at the fall festival. We attended Lion club meetings both locally and within the district. And that's not including much of the behind the scenes work of the board members and committees.
Yes, all these accomplishments in just five months. The collected efforts of the Lake Lure Lions do make a difference. I am proud to be a Lake Lure Lion and honored to be the club President. All of you truly reflect the highest ideals of Lionism "to serve." Lion Roseann and I wish to convey our "Thanks" to all the Lake Lure Lions for all the hard work you do for the community. We wish you and your family, a safe and wonderful Holiday season and a very Happy New Year.
Happy New Year,
John and Roseann Pena
- Clean Up committee meets the last Tuesday of every month. Place to be announced.
- Please remember to bring in box tops and soup cans labels, see Lion Nancy Kessel for details.
Sincerely,
President John Pena

Noteworthy
* Lake Lure Lions have taken to heart the "green" theme and conducted our monthly "litter pick-up" on January 31 in an effort to keep the sides of the entrance into our community free of litter. I sometimes wonder if collecting the trash once a month is enough because a day later trash begins to again appear along the streets. It makes you wonder if people will ever learn the lesson of respect for another's property and appreciation of the beauty that surrounds them. - Lion Diane Barrett, Publicity Chairman
* Litter pick up is the 4th Tuesday of each month. Contact Lion Roger Masson or Lion Diane Barrett.

Member Congrats! Congratulations to Lion Nancy Kessel for receiving a membership advancement key. Lion Clark seemed to enjoy "sticking" her!! (Photo taken by Lion Mary Ellen Jones).
- January Board Meeting:
- Anita Phillips with the Diabetes Unit at Rutherford Regional Hospital attended our Board meeting in January and answered questions about Camp G.O.L.D. Rush. This is a day camp for kids with juvenile diabetes. After talking with Ms. Phillips, the Board voted to donate $1,000 toward funding for this camp. The camp is staffed from the Hospital but receives no funding from them.
- The Board also approved purchasing a talking watch for a VIP who is a resident at the McCune Center.
- At the second meeting in January, Lion Penny Watkins (a master gardener) gave the club lots of wonderful information about trees and plants. She also provided some excellent websites to reference. This information should be very helpful when planning what to buy from our April plant sale. Thanks Lion Penny!
